2014-11-27libsas: remove task_collector modeChristoph Hellwig1-78/+4
The task_collector mode (or "latency_injector", (C) Dan Willians) is an optional I/O path in libsas that queues up scsi commands instead of directly sending it to the hardware. It generall increases latencies to in the optiomal case slightly reduce mmio traffic to the hardware. Only the obsolete aic94xx driver and the mvsas driver allowed to use it without recompiling the kernel, and most drivers didn't support it at all. Remove the giant blob of code to allow better optimizations for scsi-mq in the future. Drop the now unused reason argument from the ->change_queue_depth method. Also add a return value to scsi_adjust_queue_depth, and rename it to scsi_change_queue_depth now that it can be used as the default ->change_queue_depth implementation. 2014-11-12scsi: don't set tagging state from scsi_adjust_queue_depthChristoph Hellwig1-8/+4
Remove the tagged argument from scsi_adjust_queue_depth, and just let it handle the queue depth. For most drivers those two are fairly separate, given that most modern drivers don't care about the SCSI "tagged" status of a command at all, and many old drivers allow queuing of multiple untagged commands in the driver. Instead we start out with the ->simple_tags flag set before calling ->slave_configure, which is how all drivers actually looking at ->simple_tags except for one worke anyway. The one other case looks broken, but I've kept the behavior as-is for now. Except for that we only change ->simple_tags from the ->change_queue_type, and when rejecting a tag message in a single driver, so keeping this churn out of scsi_adjust_queue_depth is a clear win. Now that the usage of scsi_adjust_queue_depth is more obvious we can also remove all the trivial instances in ->slave_alloc or ->slave_configure that just set it to the cmd_per_lun default. 2014-11-12scsi: always assign block layer tags if enabledChristoph Hellwig1-37/+1
Allow a driver to ask for block layer tags by setting .use_blk_tags in the host template, in which case it will always see a valid value in request->tag, similar to the behavior when using blk-mq. This means even SCSI "untagged" commands will now have a tag, which is especially useful when using a host-wide tag map. 2013-12-19[SCSI] aci7xxx_old: delete decade+ obsolete driverPaul Gortmaker2-513/+0
After getting warnings in an allyesconfig build[1] from this driver, I decided to remind myself just how old it was, and whether it warranted fixing. In the Kconfig help text, I found: "This driver will eventually be phased out entirely" Going back to the history archive, I see the line was added[2] in Feb 2002, when we moved from v2.4.2.1 ---> v2.4.2.2 So, with over a decade of notification, and multiple major releases since then, I think we can justify removing this. Currently we have people wasting time building it during routine testing, and then wasting more time re-researching the known reported warnings, only to find that nobody really is willing to integrate the fixes[3] for it. A quick search didn't seem to indicate any active user base for it. If someone happens to have a quirky _old_ card that the eleven year old "new" driver doesn't work with, then it is entirely reasonable that they stick with a kernel version that predates this removal. 2012-09-14[SCSI] st: raise device limitJeff Mahoney1-4/+2
The device limit of 128 tape drives was established in 2003 as a significant increase from the 8 tape drives allowed previously. We're seeing customer sites that between a large number of drives and multipath are discovering more than 128 devices and running into problems. Now that we're not stuck having to store a pointer in array and aren't limited by kmalloc failing on higher order allocs we can lift the limit to fill the entire minor range based on the number of modes. Based on the current code, that's 2^17 devices. 2012-05-23Merge branch 'delete-mca' of ↵Linus Torvalds4-1411/+1
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/paulg/linux Pull the MCA deletion branch from Paul Gortmaker: "It was good that we could support MCA machines back in the day, but realistically, nobody is using them anymore. They were mostly limited to 386-sx 16MHz CPU and some 486 class machines and never more than 64MB of RAM. Even the enthusiast hobbyist community seems to have dried up close to ten years ago, based on what you can find searching various websites dedicated to the relatively short lived hardware. So lets remove the support relating to CONFIG_MCA. There is no point carrying this forward, wasting cycles doing routine maintenance on it; wasting allyesconfig build time on validating it, wasting I/O on git grep'ping over it, and so on." Let's see if anybody screams. It generally has compiled, and James Bottomley pointed out that there was a MCA extension from NCR that allowed for up to 4GB of memory and PPro-class machines. So in *theory* there may be users out there. But even James (technically listed as a maintainer) doesn't actually have a system, and while Alan Cox claims to have a machine in his cellar that he offered to anybody who wants to take it off his hands, he didn't argue for keeping MCA support either. So we could bring it back. But somebody had better speak up and talk about how they have actually been using said MCA hardware with modern kernels for us to do that. And David already took the patch to delete all the networking driver code (commit a5e371f61ad3: "drivers/net: delete all code/drivers depending on CONFIG_MCA"). * 'delete-mca' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/paulg/linux: MCA: delete all remaining traces of microchannel bus support. scsi: delete the MCA specific drivers and driver code serial: delete the MCA specific 8250 support. arm: remove ability to select CONFIG_MCA
2012-05-17scsi: delete the MCA specific drivers and driver codePaul Gortmaker4-1411/+1
The support for CONFIG_MCA is being removed, since the 20 year old hardware simply isn't capable of meeting today's software demands on CPU and memory resources. This commit removes the MCA specific SCSI drivers, and the MCA specific portions of code in dual role ISA/MCA drivers. Also, the MCA specific SCSI documentation is removed. 2012-03-27[SCSI] st: expand ability to write immediate filemarksLee Duncan1-0/+4
The st tape driver recently added the MTWEOFI ioctl, which writes a tape filemark (EOF), like the MTWEOF ioctl, except that MTWEOFI returns immediately. This makes certain applications, like backup software, run much more quickly on buffered tape drives. Since legacy applications do not know about this new MTWEOFI ioctl, this patch adds a new ioctl option that tells the st driver to return immediately when writing an EOF (i.e. a filemark). This new flag is much like the existing flag that tells the st driver to perform writes (and certain other IOs) immediately, but this new flag only applies to writing EOFs. This new feature is controlled via the MTSETDRVBUFFER ioctl, using the newly-defined MT_ST_NOWAIT_EOF flag. Use of this new feature is displayed via the sysfs tape "options" attribute. The st documentation was updated to mention this new flag, as well as the problems that can occur from using it.
